The US Sixth Fleet is the operational fleet of the US naval forces stationed in the Mediterranean.
For a long time the headquarters of the fleet was located in Gaeta in Italy, but since 2004 the headquarters of the fleet has been moved to Naples. The transfer was due to the fact that from that time on, the headquarters of the Sixth Fleet acts as a single organization with the headquarters of the American naval forces in Europe. The Fleet Commander is also the Deputy Commander of the US Naval Forces in Europe (COMNAVEUR). Both commanders hold their respective posts in the NATO military organization.
